America celebrates Juneteenth

The world is coming together to stand up against racism in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

This Juneteenth, join us for a Bloomberg QuickTake Special as we take a look at the fight against racism around the globe.In this episode you'll see a dance troupe use artistic expression to celebrate freedom, learn how African nations dealt with colonial-era statues and monuments, and take deeper look into Germany's "invisible" Black population.

1. Americans across the U.S. are celebrating the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth. On June 19th, 1865, slaves in Galveston, Texas, found out from Union troops that the civil war was over and they were freed.

2. The Supreme Court rules that federal law protects LGBTQ workers from job discrimination. The ruling extends protections to more than half of the country's 8.1 million LGBTQ workers in a landmark ruling.

3. A low-cost, widely used anti-inflammatory drug improved survival in Covid-19 patients. Dexamethasone reduced deaths by a third among patients on ventilators and by a fifth among those receiving oxygen only.

4. This dance troupe is using artistic expression to "celebrate the freedom of all Americans" on Juneteenth. The Listen With Your Eyes Dance Troupe is standing in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

5. They measure your heart rate, but these wearable devices could also detect early signs of Covid-19. Fitness trackers monitor metrics like changes in heart rate, a possible coronavirus symptom that often appears before more noticeable symptoms, such as fever. 

6. This pioneering farmer is creating harmony through food. Marcus Henderson is founding farmer of the Seattle garden that's feeding, healing and sustaining the Capitol Hill Occupied Protests, an occupation protest and self-declared autonomous zone.

7. Hong Kong Disneyland reopens to masked guests after nearly five months. About 100 visitors were lined up Thursday morning to enter the park, including fans dressed head-to-toe in Disney costumes.

8. 1.3 million U.K. children will be eligible for free meals this summer. Manchester United star Marcus Rashford successfully pushed Boris Johnson to extend a voucher policy for low-income families.

9. Meet the Sikh community in New York City handing out free meals to Black Lives Matter protesters and families impacted by Covid-19. They've served 2,000 hot meals for protesters because they say believe in the cause.

10. This woman makes masks for Indonesia's deaf and mute community. Dwi Rahayu, who is deaf and mute, created transparent masks after having a hard time communicating with her doctor during the coronavirus pandemic.
