Good morning,
During any time of crisis, conspiracy theories are sparked in some dark corner of social media, and often spread into the mainstream consciousness. The latest: the 5G theory, the unfounded idea that the 5G wireless technology rollout is causing or accelerating the spread of coronavirus, all starting in the first Chinese city to build it out: Wuhan. Mind you, there's no actual science behind the theory. But a short list of celebrities, including actors Woody Harrelson and John Cusack and British singer M.I.A, are now accelerating the spread of the theory with social media posts. And the contagion is not just online. People are actually setting fire to 5G cell towers in the UK.
Of course, the irony is that the deployment of 5G has the potential to help us restart the economy and make it easier for more people to work remotely. As our new work-from-home reality lengthens with no end in sight, that should be a welcome thought.
This is only one part of an unfortunate trend – a skepticism or downright distrust of science and technology. Too many people are ill-informed (and frightened), and therefore susceptible to rumors and conspiracy theories. And too many of our leaders take advantage of this fact for political gain.
This week's newsletter features an exclusive interview that our Kate Rogers conducted with Richard Allison, CEO of Domino's. His company is still hiring in a big way: they have 10,000 open roles across the business, and job applications are up four times from just a few weeks ago. He also shares how Domino's has not laid off or furloughed any workers and kept wages the same, and has even offered enhanced bonuses to hourly-wage workers. That interview below.
