The pandemic's next epicenter

QuickTake Tonight
Bloomberg

Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: Summer Olympics postponed, Trump eyes Easter reopening, and how to weather social isolation like an astronaut.

Is the U.S. the next epicenter?

Wuhan's unprecedented lockdown that began on Jan. 23 will be lifted on April 8, Chinese authorities said Tuesday, as new infections in Hubei province dropped to zero from a peak of 15,000 a month ago. On that date, people with a clean bill of health will be allowed to leave as public transportation returns to service and the government tries to kick start the world's second-largest economy.

Meanwhile, a new coronavirus epicenter was materializing on the other side of the world, as the WHO warned the U.S. could become the new hub of the global pandemic, given a "very large acceleration" in cases in the "outbreak that is increasing in intensity." Over the last 24 hours, 40% of newly confirmed cases worldwide were in the U.S., WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris said. With more than 51,000 infections and 600 deaths, the U.S. is now the third hardest-hit country after China and Italy.

$ignificant figures

$252 billion. Airlines worldwide could lose that much in revenue this year due to coronavirus, according to the IATA, and the number of people flying in the U.S. has dropped 86% compared to this time in 2019, the TSA said.

1.3. billion. PM Narendra Modi put the entire population of India on a "total lockdown" for 21 days, the world's most extensive stay-at-home order yet, and allocated an extra $1.97 billion for health care.

$400,000. How much it costs to flush the frequently clogged toilets aboard the U.S. Navy's two newest aircraft carriers, a congressional audit says, outlining $130 billion in underestimated long-term maintenance costs.

Highly quotable

"Not later than summer 2021." The IOC postponed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics "to safeguard the health of the athletes and the international community" after Japanese PM Shinzo Abe proposed a one-year delay.

"Raring to go by Easter." Trump doubled down on reopening the U.S. by Easter Sunday, just 19 days away: "We don't all need to be locked in a room," he said. "Many more people are going to die if we let this continue."

"Unfairly priced." Amazon suspended 3,900 selling accounts and pulled more than half a million offers in the U.S. in a bid to crack down on the "egregious price gouging of products related to the Covid-19 crisis."

This is not normal

Vast instability. East Antarctica's Denman glacier, composed of enough water to raise sea levels by five feet, receded three miles since 1996, said scientists, warning that the unusual terrain beneath it could speed ice loss.

The future is now

Bright yellow helpers. Demand is surging in China forZhenRobotics's RoboPony, a six-wheeled robot that delivers groceries, dispenses hand sanitizer and spots bare-faced people, reminding them to wear a mask.

What's good

From space with love. As the coronavirus pandemic forces many of us to self-isolate and work from home, the research continues on the ISS for NASA astronauts, who offered their tips and support to humankind.

BTW: Greta Thunberg said it's "extremely likely" she contracted coronavirus after she started experiencing mild flu symptoms following a trip to central Europe. She and her father are now self-isolating.
