Here are the latest updates and big stories that you need to follow today: 1) Coronavirus | SC seeks status report from Centre on steps taken to prevent migration of workers The Supreme Court on Monday sought a status report from the Centre by today on the measures taken in view of the large-scale migration of labourers from cities to their native villages amid the coronavirus outbreak and the consequent lockdown across the country. The top court observed that the migration of labourers out of panic and fear is becoming a bigger problem than the coronavirus. 2) Coronavirus | Seventh day of lockdown in India Reiterating that COVID-19 is still in the local transmission stage in India, the Health Ministry on Monday said it took 12 days for cases of infection to rise from 100 to 1,000 in the country and that the rate of increase has been slower than some of the developed countries. 3) Coronavirus | No inter-district movement of people in Uttarakhand on Tuesday The Uttarakhand government has withdrawn its decision of allowing inter-district movement of people within the state on Tuesday following a Union Home Ministry order on strict enforcement of the ongoing lockdown. The state government had earlier decided to allow inter-district movement for a day to help people stranded at different places in the state due to the lockdown. 4) COVID-19 | Railways converts 16 coaches into isolation wards Northern Railway has converted 16 passenger coaches into isolation wards as part of the efforts to strengthen healthcare amid the novel coronavirus scare. Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar said: “In its continuous effort to fight against COVID-19, all NR workshops have been geared up. Till now, 16 LHB coaches have been converted to function as isolation wards for suspected coronavirus patients.” 5) Coronavirus | Air India to conduct eight cargo-only flights on Tuesday Air India will undertake eight flights on Tuesday to transport cargo across various cities of the country amid the 21-day lockdown imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic, said a senior airline official on Monday. 6) COVID-19 | 68-bed field hospital being constructed in New York City's Central Park A 68-bed field hospital will be constructed by Tuesday in the city's iconic Central Park to help enhance New York City's medical capacity to treat the rapidly increasing coronavirus cases. Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters on Sunday that Mount Sinai Hospital, working with a relief organisation named Samaritan's Purse, is creating the 68-bed field hospital in the sprawling Central Park. 7) Tokyo Olympics dates announced The Tokyo Olympics will open next year in the same time slot scheduled for this year’s games. Tokyo organizers said on Monday the opening ceremony will take place on July 23, 2021 — almost exactly one year after the games were due to start this year. 8) Spain’s hospitals at breaking point as infections pass China Spain overtook China on Monday in confirmed coronavirus infections as the pandemic stretched scores of Spanish hospitals to their breaking point. Spain’s tally of infections reached 85,195 and it also reported 812 new deaths. 9) Putin urges Moscow residents to respect lockdown Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday urged residents of Moscow to respect the lockdown, saying it was a necessary measure to slow the spread of the coronavirus. “I ask you to take these forced but absolutely necessary measures... very seriously and completely responsibly,” Putin said after regional authorities in Moscow and the surrounding region ordered a strict quarantine.
