The Evening Wrap Welcome to The Evening Wrap, your guide to the day’s major news developments with concise analysis from The Hindu. Here’s what you need to know today: Going Viral A steady stream of infections from the novel coronavirus are now being reported from all across the country. The total number of cases reported from India now stands at 28. This includes 14 Italian tourists and one Indian driver who were all part of the same tour group as the Italian man who had tested positive for COVID-19 in Rajasthan. Rajasthan Health Minister Raghu Sharma said at least 215 people came in contact with the COVID-19-affected group of Italian tourists. The Italian tourists, all currently at the ITBP camp in Delhi, had travelled there via road from Jaipur and Agra. Meanwhile, six family members of the Delhi man who was found to have contracted COVID-19 have tested positive. More cases are also being reported in Telangana and these differ from Delhi in one crucial respect -- there may be two nodal points. Two samples with high viral load have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, for further testing. One is of a hospital staffer treating the COVID-19 patient, a techie from Bengaluru who tested positive on Monday. The other is from a person who is said to have travelled to Italy recently. Also today, in response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of External Affairs said that 17 Indians have been infected with coronavirus abroad. Of these, 16 are from the cruise ship in Japan, and one is from the UAE. Crypto On The Supreme Court has set aside the RBI’s two-year old ban on cryptocurrency trading. In a judgment that is significant for online financial transactions, the top court found the prohibitive circular issued by the RBI in 2018 too disproportionate. The judgement came in response to a petition filed by the Internet and Mobile Association of India, which said the RBI had banned virtual currencies only on moral grounds since no prior studies had been conducted on how they affected the economy. The court said the central bank should have opted for a less drastic mechanism to deal with the risks associated with cryptocurrency transactions. In an edition of The Hindu’s parley podcast last year, we had experts deliberating on whether a ban on private cryptocurrencies was a practical solution. You can listen to that episode here. Speeded Up The petitions seeking FIRs against BJP leaders who allegedly made hate speeches in the days preceding the communal riots in Delhi will get their day in court earlier than expected. The Supreme Court has asked the Delhi High Court to hear all the cases on Friday and said that the long period of adjournment granted by the Delhi HC was “unjustified”. These petitions were the subject of much intrigue last week when a judge who had pressed the Delhi police to file FIRs was transferred, and the case bounced to another bench of the court, which then granted the government and the Delhi police several weeks to respond. Super Joe A resurgent Joe Biden, the former U.S. Vice President, racked up an incredible nine primary wins as 14 states voted on Super Tuesday in the Democratic primary race to put up a candidate to face Donald Trump in November's general election. Biden's campaign, struggling for funds, was believed to be losing momentum as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders Vermont emerged as the clear front runner. However, with 10 primary victories now in the course of three days he has mounted a historic turnaround and may now be in pole position to claim the nomination. Despite the former VP racking up wins across the country, Sanders still claimed the prized state of California which has the most number of delegates. Hostage Rescue Major political drama is unfolding in Madhya Pradesh, where the ruling Congress government has claimed that eight lawmakers from the State were being kept ‘hostage’ by the BJP in a five-star hotel in Manesar, in an attempt to topple the government. In an overnight drama, two Congress leaders, including former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, are reported to have taken at least four legislators out of the hotel. Speaking to The Hindu today, Madhya Pradesh Congress media chief Shobha Oza alleged that eight MLAs – four from the Congress, two from the BSP, one from the SP and an Independent – were held hostage at the hotel. In Brief: The Delhi Minorities Commission, in its assessment report of the events that unfolded in the capital last week, found that the violence was “one-sided and well-planned”. The Commission also said that compensation announced by the Delhi government was inadequate, considering the extent of damage caused due to the violence. The Delhi government moved a city court seeking a fresh date for the execution of four Nirbhaya case convicts. President Ram Nath Kovind had earlier in the day rejected the mercy petition of Pawan Kumar Gupta, the last of the convicts to seek a reprieve. A special court on Wednesday held expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was last year sentenced to life for raping a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao, guilty in connection with the death of her father.
