Education in the age of Covid-19

More countries around the world are closing schools to stem the spread of coronavirus that's killed some 3,200 people worldwide and infected 94,000 others. Across China, schools were shut indefinitely on Wednesday in a bid to contain the virus, forcing tens of thousands of courses, from grade school to university, to be taught online. In Italy, the country with the largest number of virus-related deaths outside of China, education ministers also shuttered schools until March 15. Last week, Japan announced the closing of all of its schools for about a month. In the U.S. schools in New York and Washington state canceled classes this week after some students had been exposed to Covid-19. The CDC says only schools in areas with confirmed cases should consider closing after consulting with local health officials.

$ignificant figures

$7.8 billion. The U.S. House passed an emergency spending bill worth that much to fund the government's response to the coronavirus outbreak. The Senate is expected to vote later this week.

54,000. Iran, the center of the biggest Covid-19 outbreak in the Middle East, will temporarily free that many prisoners and activate 300,000 health workers and specialists to quell the spread of coronavirus.

13%. The share of voters aged 19-29 who turned out on Super Tuesday, casting some doubt on Bernie Sanders's claim that his campaign will draw a wave of younger, energized voters in the general election.

Highly quotable

"A burnt child dreading fire." In her first official statement, Kim Jong Yo, the younger sister of King Jong Un, panned South Korea's "gangster-like" and "perfectly foolish" objections to Pyongyang's latest firing drills.

"Fear is more contagious than virus." French "Spiderman" Alain Robert scaled a 38-story building in Barcelona using his bare hands to bring attention to the "paranoia" around the coronavirus.

"We French love pizza." France's ambassador to Italy wolfed down a Neapolitan pizza in a gastronomic apology of sorts after a French satirical program poked fun at Italy with a sketch featuring a "corona pizza."

This is not normal

Lethal crops. More extreme weather caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may alter the level of toxins in foods like apples, barley, cassava and lychee as crops try to shield against climate change.

The future is now

New frontier. In a first, scientists edited a gene inside a person's body via CRISPR by injecting a harmless virus into a blind patient's eye to restore their sight, marking "a new era" of operating on DNA to treat diseases.

What's good

Green garb. After years of research, entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez developed Desserto, an alt-leather made from cactus leaves that could replace the need for animals in the fashion industry.
