Hi readers,
Alas, this will be the last Capital Exchange newsletter for a few months, but you'll still be able to get regular updates about the intersection of business and politics by subscribing to the CNBC Politics newsletter. Click HERE to subscribe today. My colleague and politics editor Mike Calia will keep you informed on all of our reporting as well as updates on CapEx events in 2020.
Thank you to all who have attended our breakfasts, and faithfully subscribed to the newsletter. I'll be back in June, but until then … a few stories as you head into the weekend:
2020 invades Super Bowl Sunday: Expect politics to invade your living room this weekend. President Trump will have two ads in the Super Bowl, and presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg will also run an ad focused on gun control. Megan Graham and Brian Schwartz have a preview of the ads, and the big money these campaigns are spending to grab your attention.
Worth your time: Following President Trump's 2017 trip to Asia, Kayla Tausche filed a FOIA request for details on a meeting Jared Kushner arranged with investors while in China. After many follow-ups, the State Department informed Tausche that it would complete the request in July 2021, roughly 3.5 years after the initial request. FOIA requests can take time, but the State Dept processed 83% of "complex" requests in less than 400 days during the first two years of Trump's presidency. Since Tausche published her story, new details have emerged about the meeting, which you can find below.
Impeachment recap: In case you haven't been following the daily proceedings, check out Ylan Mui's latest impeachment recap on where things stand as of this morning. Senators are set to vote today on whether to include new witnesses, which appears unlikely, and could proceed quickly to a final vote on the articles of impeachment.
See you later this year!
