Here are the day’s major developments:  In Recovery Mode Twenty-eight persons in Lucknow have been asked to pay around ₹64 lakh for the damage they had allegedly caused to private and public property during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on December 19. Those served notices include retired IPS officer S.R. Darapuri, lawyer and activist Mohammad Shoaib, Congress member Sadaf Jafar, teacher Robin Verma, and cultural activist Deepak Kabir. The order, issued earlier this week by Additional District Magistrate (East) K.P Singh, asked the 28 persons to pay the amount within 30 days or face confiscation of their properties. This move could now set a precedent, as following the U.P. order, Assam police has also said that it would recover the cost of properties damaged during anti-CAA protests from those allegedly involved in acts of arson and vandalism. Alternative History A tasting menu and dinners that are a part of the ongoing exhibition on IndusValley food at the National Museum in Delhi would not include non-vegetarian dishes, as it was a “tradition” to serve only vegetarian food at events in the museum, an official said. The week-long event on culinary history is organised by a private company, One Station Million Stories (OSMS). An “indicative menu” on the company’s website included meat dishes. But the museum took a last minute call to remove them. Like any other civilisation in the Middle Bronze Age, meat was a major part of the diet of the Indus Valley civilisation.  Not that Nationalism  Acting perhaps on the advice of a volunteer in the U.K. more well-versed in semantics, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat today urged supporters of the BJP and the RSS to stop using the word “nationalism” as it had connotations of “Hitler and Nazism”. “Do not use the word ‘nationalism’. Use ‘national’, ‘nationality’, ‘nation’. The meaning of ‘nationalism’ is Hitler, Nazism and Fascism. The aim of the Sangh is to boost the feeling of patriotism and feeling of Hinduism,” the RSS chief said at a programme in Ranchi.  Dear Leaders In a brave attempt to introduce internal democracy within the Congress leadership, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor urged the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to hold leadership elections to “energise workers and inspire voters”. Tharoor’s appeal came in support of his party colleague and former MP Sandeep Dikshit’s remarks that the biggest challenge faced by the Congress is the “leadership question”.  Honourable mentions Supreme Court-appointed interlocutors Sanjay Hegde and Sadhana Ramachandran continued a second day of dialogue with women protesters who have been on a sit-in against CAA-NRC-NPR since December 16. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday allayed fears in the northeast about Article 371 meeting the same fate as Article 370. He was addressing a public rally at the 34th Statehood Day celebrations in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian arm of German software group SAP said on Thursday it had shut down all offices in the country for sanitisation after two of its employees in the southern city of Bengaluru tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
