Here are the day’s major developments Familiar charge A Delhi court today sent JNU student Sharjeel Imam to 14 days of judicial custody in the December 15 Jamia-New Friends Colony violence case. In the charge sheet, the Delhi police claimed that an accused in the case has alleged in his disclosure statement that he was provoked by Imam’s speeches. Violence had erupted around the Jamia Millia Islamia university during an anti-CAA protest march by the university’s students. The Delhi police is accused of using excessive force to quell the protests and storming the campus. No student from Jamia has been named in the charge sheet. Mr. Imam, a PhD student, has become a controversial figure in recent months. State police in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Delhi have filed sedition cases against him over a speech he made in Aligarh Muslim University. In the video of the speech, which went viral, Mr. Imam could be heard calling for a road blockade aimed at disrupting the flow of traffic and supply lines between Assam and the rest of India. He was involved in organising the Shaheen Bagh protests and is a prominent voice against the CAA. He was arrested by the Delhi police from his hometown Jehanabad in Bihar on January 28. We have a video explainer on Mr. Imam and the charges against him which you can see here. ‘Anti-national’ United Kingdom parliamentarian Debbie Abrahams was denied entry into India yesterday and had her visa revoked because she was indulging in activities that went against India’s national interest, a government official said. Ms. Abrahams is the leader of the U.K. Parliament’s All Party Parliamentary Group for Kashmir. Ms. Abrahams claims she was treated like a criminal at the Delhi airport and was deported to Dubai on Monday as she was found not in possession of a valid visa. On Twitter today, she shared a copy of her e-business visa which was granted on October 7, 2019 and which was valid for a year to attend “business meetings.” Son no more Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor has hit out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a man he once called a father figure. Taking aim at the Bihar government’s development model, Mr. Kishor accused Mr. Kumar of making “ideological compromises” to stay in alliance with the BJP. Mr. Kishor, who has been vocal about his opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), said Mr. Kumar should spell out whether he was on the side of Mahatma Gandhi or with those who supported Nathuram Godse. Mr. Kishor was launching the ‘Baat Bihar Ki’ campaign aimed at mobilising youth for ‘new leadership’ in Bihar. Hidden away The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has served notice to 45 families living in a slum area near the Sardar Vallabhai Patel stadium where prime Minister Narendra Modi will host U.S. president Donald Trump later this month. By all accounts, this is not the first measure taken to hide the city’s slums. Our previous reporting indicated that other measures included resurfacing roads, planting palm trees along the streets and, non-ironically, building a wall. Honorable mentions: The head of a leading hospital in China’s central city of Wuhan died of COVID-19, becoming the second prominent Chinese doctor to have succumbed to the outbreak.
