Good afternoon,
There are frequent debates around this office about Slack. For some, it is a principal mode of communication. For others, it's an unnecessary and unwelcome addition to an already crowded suite of communications tools (this writer currently has 788 unread emails in his business email inbox). There tends to be a generational difference, predictably, with younger workers in the 'love Slack' camp and older workers being in the eyeroll camp.
What's clear, however, is that companies are betting big that the future workplace includes prominent use of Slack or a Slack-like apps. To wit: Microsoft's big new marketing push for its (they hope) Slack killer: Teams. Microsoft has successfully reinvented themselves in recent years under CEO Satya Nadella, moving away from a Windows reliant, monolithic all-or-nothing software company, to a new model, one which embraces partnerships, flexibility and customization. This has led to big profits and a soaring stock price … they have plenty of money to take on (take out?) companies they see as direct competitors rather than possible partners. Companies like Slack.
Will Microsoft be able to muscle Slack out of your office the way they muscled Apple out with Windows a generation ago?
Until next week,
