Greetings, QuickTake readers! In this edition: India grinds to a halt, Harry and Meghan bow out, and the shock that helps the paralyzed walk.

Trump retreats from war with Iran

It's been an extraordinary 24 hours of news out of the Middle East, which culminated Wednesday with Trump's address from the White House, in which he appeared to back away from the precipice of war with Iran.

How we got here:

  • Iran strikes back. Early Wednesday, a total of 16 ballistic missiles targeted two military bases in Iraq that house U.S. forces in what Iran called "fierce revenge" for the death of Qassem Soleimani.
  • Jetliner crash. Not long after, a Boeing 737 bound for Kiev crashed after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 passengers. Officials pointed to technical issues and said there was no apparent link to the strikes.
  • U.S. backs away. Later, Trump said Iran "appears to be standing down" and that no Americans died in the strikes. He vowed to never let Iran obtain nuclear weapons and announced new sanctions.
  • Congress briefed. After the speech, top White House officials held classified briefings with U.S. House and Senate members to lay out the justification for the Soleimani drone strike.
  • Restraining Trump. Unconvinced by their reasoning, Nancy Pelosi said the House will vote Thursday on a resolution to limit Trump's war powers on Iran.

$ignificant figures

250 million. About how many people across India went on a 24-hour strike called by trade unions against "anti-people" economic policies of the Hindu nationalist government.

227 million tons. U.S. oil and gas expansion threatens to unleash that much additional greenhouse gas pollution by 2025, totaling 990.5 tons of emissions, a report says.

$346 million. How much Elon Musk could net if Tesla's market value hits $100 billion, which would unlock the first tranche of his executive pay package.

Highly quotable

"Impossible." EU Commission head Ursula von der Leyen warned there isn't time to negotiate a comprehensive U.K.-EU trade deal before PM Boris Johnson's year-end Brexit deadline.

"Brutally taken from my world." Ex-Nissan chair Carlos Ghosn slammed Japan's "rigged justice system" in his first appearance since his arrest for financial crimes and daring escape to Lebanon.

"Step back." Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they would bow out as "senior" members of the Royal Family and split their time between Britain and the U.S.

This is not normal

Wiped out. More than 1 billion animals have died from Australia's bushfires since September, including thousands of koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and cockatoos, in a stunning loss to the country's biodiversity.

The future is now

Regaining what they lost. People with spinal cord injuries can stand and even walk again, researchers say, thanks to an implanted epidural stimulator that sends an electrical shock to the nervous system.

What's good

Represent. The highly anticipated "Saved by the Bell" reboot will star transgender actress Josie Totah, 18, who'll play Lexi, a popular cheerleader who is "both admired and feared by her fellow students."

Before you go: "It's about damn time," Lizzo said after Bonnaroo announced her as the music festival's first-ever female headliner.
