Greetings, TicToc readers! In this edition: protests all over India, hundreds of migrants rescued in Italy, and a shortage of french fries.

India demands justice for murder victim

Protests took place all over India as people

demand justice for a veterinarian who was gang-raped and killed last week. After the 27-year-old woman went missing, her burned body was found on Thursday in an underpass by a passerby in Hyderabad. Police say four suspects have been taken into custody. Demonstrators called for a fast-track investigation of the case and for stricter laws ensuring the safety of women in India.

More:

  • India's Defense Minister said the attack had "brought shame to the entire country," calling for the "most stringent punishment" for the attackers.

Highly quotable

"I'm taking that break off." Trump said he'll restore steel and aluminum tariffs on Brazil and Argentina, accusing the nations of hurting American farmers through currency manipulation.

"Ethical lapses." Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired Police Superintendant Eddie Johnson for being "intentionally dishonest with me" about an investigation into a recent incident in which he was found asleep behind the wheel of his SUV.

"Disappointed." UN Secretary General António Guterres isn't happy with the word's efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, adding the world's most polluting countries should accept that they also need to become carbon neutral by 2050.

$ignificant figures

149. That's how many migrants the Italian Coast Guard rescued after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean.

208. At least that many people were killed in Iran amid protests over gas prices, which have risen by 50% since November 15th.

1 year.  Thousands of supporters gathered in Mexico City to celebrate President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's first year in office. Meanwhile, protestors dressed in white expressed anger over the economy, rising violence, and deepening political divisions.

This is not normal

A dipping supply of fries? A cold, wet harvest season damaged crops of key potato producers in the U.S. and Canada, which could mean a smaller supply and higher prices for fries.

The future is now

Spotting plastic from space. Researchers are using satellites to track plastic pollution in our coasts before they enter the open ocean, helping conservationists target clean-up locations.

What's good

Rosa Parks gets memorialized. Alabama's Governor Kay Ivey unveiled a statue of Rosa Parks just 30 feet from where the civil rights hero is believed to have sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
