QuickTake Tonight

Greetings, Quicktake readers! In this edition: 8 are sentenced in the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi, a "talent war" is brewing in gaming, and Peru may have its first-ever member of parliament with Down Syndrome.

Five sentenced to death in Khashoggi murder

A Saudi court has sentenced 5 people to death and 3 others to prison for the murder of government critic Jamal Khashoggi. However, it ruled that the assassination was not premeditated and said it lacked the evidence to incriminate the two top officials with close ties to Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Khashoggi's murder drew global outrage despite Prince Mohammed denying his involvement in the killing. The verdict has drawn criticism from human rights groups who believe the murder couldn't have taken place without the prince's knowledge.

$ignificant figures

$420. Elon Musk is getting a laugh after Tesla's stock hit a record $420 -  the weed-linked level that he said he had secured funding to take the company private.  "Whoa … the stock is so high lol," he tweeted.

60+ cars. Dozens of people have been injured after a pileup on the I-64 highway in York County, Virginia. Fog and ice were causative factors. "It was just so scary," one driver said.

$13.6 billion. Jeff Bezos is on track to lose more wealth than anybody on the planet this year due to his divorce from MacKenzie Bezos. The Amazon CEO's net worth has fallen $13.6 billion after a quarter of his holdings in the company were transferred to his wife of 25 years.

Highly quotable

"A change in leadership was necessary." Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg has been fired, a once-unthinkable turning point for a U.S. industrial champion now engulfed in turmoil after 2 deadly crashes of its 737 Max jetliner.

"A prolonged emergency." Venice is facing the prospect of more intense floods at a time when it's still counting the cost of the exceptionally high tide that hit in November.

"A Hollywood slave."  Bill Cosby's publicist criticized Eddie Murphy for making fun of Cosby during his SNL opening monologue.

This is not normal

An "all-out talent war" is brewing in video gaming. Popular live-streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins announced he was moving from Twitch to Mixer, a move that set off a fight for top-tier talent unprecedented in the history of video games and influencers. The biggest streamers are earning as much as $40 million over 3 to 5 years, contracts that mirror those of professional athletes. And like athletes, many of the biggest streamers get sponsorship deals worth millions more.

The future is now

Mealworms could solve the world's recycling problem. A new Stanford study found that mealworms can eat toxic additives in Styrofoam with no ill effects. The worms can then still be used as a protein-rich feedstock.

What's good

Bryan Russell is running to become Peru's first-ever member of parliament with Down Syndrome. The 27-year-old's campaign focuses on the need for representation and inclusion. He says he hopes that he can "break the paradigm" that people with Down Syndrome can't be independent.
