EDITOR'S NOTE
Hello readers,
We hope you had a great Fourth of July and that you're still taking it easy.
The holiday might have shortened the week, but there was still plenty of news and drama in the world of politics. Democratic presidential candidates started reporting their second quarter fundraising hauls. Former Vice President Joe Biden's campaign said he raised $21.5 million in 66 days. Kamala Harris, meanwhile, has started to get even more attention from big-money donors following her debate performance, Brian Schwartz reports.
While Democrats are fighting over donor dollars, President Trump hasn't faced any competition in building his war chest. The GOP and the Trump campaign raised a combined $105 million in the second quarter. The president also put one of his signature campaign issues front and center in a battle with the courts. Despite a Supreme Court ruling and assurances to the contrary from his own administration, Trump is pushing to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.
On the other side of the world, Amanda Macias reports that China continues to assert its power and influence in the South China Sea, through which more than $3 trillion in trade passes each year. In a move the U.S. called "truly disturbing," the Chinese military conducted a missile test, even as Trump and President Xi Jinping negotiated a truce in their nations' trade fight.
