Tim Cook: Apple wants to keep making the Mac Pro in the US

On its quarterly earnings call, Tim Cook addressed the recent news about Apple asking for tax waivers on Mac Pro production. Apple’s CEO said that “Apple has been making the Mac Pro in the US” and “we want to continue to do that”.

Tim Cook confirms Apple Card rollout to begin in August

On Apple’s Q3 2019 earnings call, Tim Cook confirmed that Apple Card will begin its rollout in August. Apple had only previously said that Apple Card would launch sometime during the summer of this year.

Apple releases Q3 2019 earnings, announces revenue of $53.8 billion

Apple earnings day is upon us, and with it we learn how the company performed during the third fiscal quarter of 2019. AAPL forecasted Q3 earnings revenue between $52.5 billion and $54.5 billion, which compares to $53.3 billion reported in the same quarter a year ago.

So how much money did Apple actually make during the first three months of the calendar year? $53.8 billion revenue and $10.04 billion profit. Apple no longer reports iPhone, iPad, and Mac unit sales numbers, though it does report a revenue breakdown by product category.

Apple forecasts revenue between $61 billion and $64 billion during Q4 2019. More details below:

New LG UltraFine 5K display now on sale, works with Mac or iPad Pro

Apple is now selling a new generation of the 5K LG UltraFine display. For the first time, the 5K UltraFine is now compatible with the iPad Pro, finally offering a 5K display option for 2018 iPad Pro users.

Previously, the 5K UltraFine display would only work over Thunderbolt. Now, it can output 5K over USB-C DisplayPort, which means it can now work with any of Apple’s current Mac and iPad Pro lineup.

LG rolling out HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support with update for select 2019 TVs, more to come this fall

After initially slating a July 25 date to enable HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support for some of its 2019 TVs, LG has officially started rolling out software updates for its OLED and NanoCell 4K UHD TVs with ThinQ AI. While the company’s UK press team said last week that 2018 and earlier LG TVs would also be gaining the Apple integration, LG has since said that it has no plans to offer the updates beyond the 2019 models.

Apple releasing fourth iOS 13 public beta, fifth watchOS 6 developer beta

Update: Apple has also released the fifth developer beta of watchOS 6 today.

Apple today is releasing the fourth public beta of iOS 13 to users. The update comes following the release of developer beta five yesterday, and the release of the third public beta two weeks ago. Apple is also releasing iPadOS 13 public beta 4 and tvOS 13 beta 4 today.

Apple has announced a new addition to the Today at Apple session lineup. In a series of “art-based Today At Apple augmented reality experiences”, customers can go on an interactive walk to see AR set pieces from leading digital artists.

There’s also a new in-store session which walks customers through using Swift Playgrounds to create their own AR experience. And, Apple will be debuting an AR art installation in every Apple Store.

Comment: iPad icon spacing option in latest beta is a huge missed opportunity

Apple yesterday released the fifth developer beta of iPadOS 13, and it included a Home screen improvement: an option for adjusting iPad icon spacing.

In iPadOS 13, you can now adjust Home screen icon density. This means you can pick between a 4×5 grid of apps, or a 6×5 grid of apps.

Any improvement here is welcome, of course, but even a 6×5 icon grid is a tremendous waste of space on a 12.9-inch iPad. Offering an option to change it, but doing so in the most limited way imaginable, is a huge missed opportunity …

Six serious 'zero interaction' vulnerabilities found in iOS; one not yet fixed

Google security researchers have discovered six so-called ‘zero interaction’ iOS vulnerabilities – bugs that can allow an attacker to take control of the phone without the user having to do anything other than receive and open a message.

Five of them have been fixed in iOS 12.4, but Apple has not yet been able to completely close the sixth one …
