The Wall Street Journal has a big story today about Jony Ive's slow detachment from Apple. It's an interesting read that seems to reveal problems in both directions: a CEO with waning interest in design and a design chief with waning interest in showing up to work. There's certainly an argument to be made that this represents a major failure by Apple to retain the design leadership that, in many ways, defined how the company is seen today. But after decades under Ive's leadership and a mission so well-accomplished that the entire industry has embraced his message, maybe bringing in some new ideas (and energy) isn't the worst outcome. -Jake |
