Lost in Chinese translation

Many native English speakers were baffled by an uproar over the UBS chief economist who referred to "Chinese pigs" in remarks about swine flu sweeping the region. In English, there isn't really a problem, a bilingual BlackRock strategist explained, "but it does sound pretty bad when you read the Chinese translation."

It turns out "pig" is considered derogatory in that context, and the economist's attempt at humor was, well, lost in translation. UBS said the comments were innocently made, apologized and put the economist on leave. Still, a state-owned infrastructure company excluded UBS from a bond deal. For anyone with future porcine concerns in China, using the word "hog" is fine. Janet Paskin
