The first Democratic debates of the 2020 presidential election cycle are in the books. Whether you watched them or not, CNBC's politics team breaks down what you need to know as the battle for the White House begins in earnest.
Twenty candidates debated over two nights, but there were a few clear standouts, as Jacob Pramuk explains. The candidate who made the biggest impression was Kamala Harris. She had been considered a top-tier candidate but hadn't really had her moment to shine. The debates had an immediate impact on the campaign. One-time rising star Beto O'Rourke ran into a few obstacles Wednesday night. As Brian Schwartz reports, his performance compelled some of his donors and supporters to acknowledge that the Texan needed to step up his game at the next debate. Health insurers also had reason to be concerned after Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Harris all teed off on private industry in their push for a "Medicare for All" system.
The 2020 election was also on President Trump's mind as he was attending the G-20 summit in Japan. Democrats during Thursday night's debate made it a point to hammer him over and over. Meanwhile, he weighed in on Twitter – and, in an apparently light manner, told Russian President Vladimir Putin not to interfere with the vote next year.
