Vice President Mike Pence plans hawkish China speech as trade tensions boil | | | THU, MAY 30, 2019 | | | | WHERE BUSINESS AND POLITICS CONVERGE | | Hi, everyone! I'm Kayla Tausche, and I cover trade policy in the era of Trump. In two weeks we'll be hosting our next Capital Exchange event here in DC, focused on the White House's trade agenda. We'll tackle everything from the trade war with China to the ratification of a new deal between the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Since I began covering the trade beat, I have focused on the Trump administration's effort to reset the U.S.'s economic relationships with its allies and adversaries. From Beijing to Quebec City to Mar-a-Lago, our coverage has taken viewers behind closed doors of negotiations between President Trump and top officials from China, NATO and the G7. I've interviewed steel and aluminum CEOs praising tariffs, farmers rebuking them, and Republican leaders trying to figure out how to reverse them. And I've detailed the battle lines drawn by various White House advisors trying to sell the President on their preferred policy outcome.
As part of the upcoming Capital Exchange event in DC, I'll host a conversation with Clete Willems, who until last month was on the frontlines of the White House's trade offensive. Willems served as deputy director of the National Economic Council, as the "sherpa" leading multilateral talks, and as a key voice at the negotiating table with China. We'll also hear from Thea Lee, now President of the Economic Policy Institute, and a trade economist who has helped shape and explain the perspective of labor. Lee was on the front lines of the original NAFTA negotiation and was appointed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. US-China Business Council President Craig Allen has spent much of his career in the Asia region in various government posts and has a keen insight into what's at stake for his corporate members.
We've got just a few spots left, so be sure to sign up for the event. Ahead for our discussion, we've provided a primer below with some of CNBC's latest reporting on the key issues we hope to tackle on June 11.
Hope to see you then!

| How the trade war is impacting the stock market | UnitedHealth, Pfizer, Travelers Companies, Merck and McDonald's were the only stocks of the Dow 30 in positive territory for the month on Thursday. 3M, Dow, Intel, Caterpillar and Apple, the worst performers in May, were each down at least 11%. The blue-chip Dow has shed more than 1,400 points (5.5%) in May as a breakdown in trade relations triggered a new tariff wave between the U.S. and China. | | | Here's why China's trade war threat to restrict rare earth minerals is so serious | Rare earth minerals are commonly used in high-tech devices, automotives, clean energy and defense. About 35% of global reserves are in China, the most in the world, and the country is a mining machine, producing 70% of total rare earths in 2018. U.S. consumption of rare earth compounds and metals relies heavily on imports, which rose to $160 million in 2018. Eighty percent were from China. | | | Why U.S.-China trade talks stalled | Trade talks between the U.S. and China appear to have stalled. China has not shown willingness to revisit past commitments it made that it reneged on earlier this month. Sources say scheduling discussions have not taken place since the Trump administration ratcheted up its scrutiny of Chinese telecom companies. | | Capital Exchange Global Trade: Thriving in a New Era Tariffs, a new NAFTA, an ascendant China, Brexit.
