Apple has to face a lawsuit about whether the App Store has an illegal monopoly over iOS apps, the Supreme Court ruled today. There's no judgement yet about whether Apple actually has an illegal monopoly, but the fact that it'll soon be sorted out in court is going to be one of the most interesting tech developments to watch in recent memory. Apple, of course, maintains total control over iOS apps — often for good reason. But you have to wonder: what would the iPhone look like if there were additional app stores, selling apps with different rules and restrictions? Messier, no question. But probably a lot more interesting, too. -Jake |
