1. Coronavirus | Latest numbers and developments
The number of positive coronavirus cases reported from India now stands at 29,04,129 at the time of publishing this newsletter. The toll from the disease stands at 54,991.
2. Heavy rains affect normal life in parts of country
Rains in Delhi and its neighbouring areas this morning led to long traffic snarls and damaged property. The Ayanagar weather station recorded 122.8 mm between 8.30 am on Wednesday and 8.30 am on Thursday, which was 11 times the normal rainfall. Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional forecasting centre, said moderate rains will continue till Friday morning; Heavy rains led to worsening of the flood situation in Uttar Pradesh where over 870 villages in 16 districts have been affected; Heavy rain lashes south Bengal districts, more showers likely; Heavy rains likely in Telangana on Friday, says IMD; Heavy rains in Odisha, two men washed away A man carries ration through waterlogged roads on Thursday.
3. Strict lockdown enforced in West Bengal, more than 2,500 arrested
The lockdown will remain in force on Friday too.
4. Punjab govt announces weekend lockdown in all cities, towns
The night curfew will be from 7 pm till 5 am instead of the earlier 9 pm to 5 am duration in all cities and towns. The measures will take effect from Friday.
5. Gujarat ex-MLA to return to Congress
Former Gujarat Congress MLA Indranil Rajyaguru, who had fought the 2017 Assembly election against Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and later quit the party, will return to the party fold on Friday.
6. Cabinet Secretary-led panel to select candidate for RBI Deputy Governor on Friday
The panel had a preliminary meeting on August 7 with regard to the selection of a successor for senior-most Deputy Governor N.S. Vishwanathan, who demitted office three months ahead of his extended tenure on March 31 on health grounds after serving the monetary authority for 39 years.
7. Auction of Mahatma Gandhi glasses in the UK
A pair of gold-plated spectacles believed to have been worn by Mahatma Gandhi and presented as a gift in the 1900s have emerged on the UK auction circuit, estimated to fetch between 10,000 pounds and 15,000 pounds. A pair of personal spectacles once owned by Mahatma Gandhi is to go on sale on August 21 at East Bristol Auctions
8. Chinese Banks may get Rs. 7,000 crore from RCom, RTL resolution plan: Source
The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) Mumbai is scheduled to hear the resolution plan of RCOM, RTL and RITL on Friday, the source added.

10. CSK squad flies to UAE on Friday
"Harbhajan will not be travelling with the team to Dubai due to personal reasons. He is expected to join the squad in two weeks," a CSK official told PTI on Thursday.
