Facebook smacked with record $5 billion fine by FTC over privacy violations

Reported by The Wall Street Journal this afternoon, sources have shared that the FTC has approved a roughly $5 billion settlement with Facebook over privacy violations that will end its probe into the company that started over a year ago.

Hulu brings back 4K streaming, works on Chromecast Ultra & Apple TV

2019 13-inch MacBook Pro teardown reveals soldered-down SSD, slightly larger battery, modular ports

City of Vancouver approves contested Pacific Centre Apple Store development

Report: Amazon working on new Echo speaker to directly compete against HomePod and Sonos

According to Bloomberg, Amazon is working on a new addition to the Amazon Echo smart speaker lineup to more directly compete against Apple’s HomePod and Sonos speakers in terms of sound quality.

The new model is purportedly set to release “by next year” and current prototypes feature at least four internal tweeters. The HomePod cylinder contains seven beam-forming tweeters. The current Echo lineup will also “receive minor updates this fall”, according to the publication.

The new 1.4 GHz entry-level MacBook Pro is probably faster than you would expect

The newly-announced $1299 MacBook Pro adds Touch ID, Touch Bar, and the latest 8th-gen Intel CPUs. At first glance, the CPU may seem a bit paltry given its 1.4 GHz base clock spec.

However, it turns out that this machine is probably faster than you’d think and compares quite favorably given its entry-level price point in the MacBook Pro lineup.

IDC estimates Mac shipments were up 10% in Q2, but Gartner says otherwise
